LAPAROSCOPIC MIS CENTRE
|A team of trained laparoscopic surgeons, with different subspecialty interests and skill sets, but with one common objective, to ensure best outcomes for our patients.|
Nexus Surgical Laparoscopic and MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) Centre is a surgical unit dedicated to providing high-quality minimally invasive and laparoscopic solutions for your surgical problems. Marrying evidence-based practice, cutting-edge technology and passion, Nexus Surgical Laparoscopic and MIS Centre seeks to be the one-stop centre which provides quality care in the discipline of laparoscopic surgery, so that our patients can reap the benefits of a minimally invasive procedure.
What is laparoscopic surgery?
It is a modern surgical technique in which operations are performed through small holes of about 0.5 to 1.5cm, rather than a long open wound.
It is therefore also called keyhole surgery.
The laparoscope is a video camera, which is able to transmit high-definition live images of what is happening inside the patient onto a television monitor. The images guide the surgeon in performing the operation, using several thin instruments. With these, the surgeon can perform the same operation as that achieved through the traditional open surgery, minus the long open wound.

What are the advantages of laparoscopic surgery?
Since the wounds are now significantly smaller, the advantages are:
The Nexus Surgical Laparoscopic and MIS centre is led by Dr Ho Choon Kiat. He has immense interest in minimally invasive surgery as well as the use of cutting edge medical technology for the benefit of the patient.
Dr Ho was a Clinical Fellow at the Division of Surgical Oncology and Pancreatic Surgery at the Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany, 2004. Under the tutorship of Professor Helmut Friess and Professor Markus Büchler, he received formal training in complex pancreatic operations like the Whipple’s operation, and the treatment of pancreatic tumours like cancers and neuroendocrine tumours, as well as the management of pancreatitis.
He was also a Clinical Fellow at the Royal Brisbane Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Australia, 2005. During his fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery, he trained under Drs Nicholas O’Rourke, Les Nathanson, Andrew Stevenson and Ian Martin. They taught him laparoscopic liver, bile duct, pancreas and colorectal procedures.
Following his return to Singapore, together with Dr Lim Khong Hee, they led the Centre of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, so as to teach and further develop this discipline in Singapore.
Dr Ho also served as the Director of Endoscopy Centre, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He is a member of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA)
We are able to provide a comprehensive laparoscopic surgical service, encompassing the entire spectrum of sub-specialties within the discipline of General Surgery. Below are some examples of the conditions that the Centre can treat using the laparoscopic or MIS technique.
Upper Gastrointestinal tract:
Liver and Bile Duct:
Clinical research on the application of laparoscopic operations for cancer has also found that minimally invasive operations are as good as traditional open operations in removing the cancer, e.g. colon cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, etc. In addition, the patients get to enjoy the same dividends of faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.
Besides the usual laparoscopic surgery performed using 2 or more thin instruments, we can also perform the following:
We also offer MIS performed as Day Surgery for suitable patients:
Nexus Surgical Associates is a group practice, and hence teamwork is our core value. As a team, Nexus Surgical Associates is able to harness the strengths of different surgeons. The whole is indeed greater than the sum of the parts.
All our surgeons are trained laparoscopic surgeons, each with his/her own special skill set and different sub-specialty interests. We complement one another, especially in performing more complex laparoscopic operations. In addition, we make a point of keeping abreast with the latest developments in his/her own area of interest, and would bring such knowledge and skills back to the group, so that our patients can be assured that they are receiving the most up-to-date and evidence-based treatment.
If the situation requires it, we also work closely with Urologists and Gynaecologists who specialize in laparoscopic surgery.
