It refers to a condition in which there is a failure of the anti-reflux barrier, allowing abnormal return of gastric contents into the oesophagus.

It may present with heartburn (burning sensation in the centre of the chest), pain or regurgitation. It may also present with asthma, hoarseness or cough.
